Overview

Dr Collins received his medical training at University College and Westminster Hospital, London UK before training in gastroenterology at McMaster. Between 1978-81 he was a research fellow at the Digestive Diseases Branch of the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda Md before coming on faculty in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine at McMaster in 1981. In 1983 he became Director of the recently established Intestinal Diseases Research Unit at McMaster and Chief of Gastroenterology 1993-2006. From 2006-17 he was the Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Health Sciences. He is currently director of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute of which he was the founder. He has served on review committees for the Canada Gairdner Foundation, CIHR, Crohns Colitis Canada and its US counterpart CCFA and has served as President of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology.. He has over 300 publications and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He currently holds the title of Distinguished University Professor.His research addresses the role of the gut-brain axis and its modulation by the intestinal microbiota in health and disease.
