The Relationship of Enteric Microbial Infection and Functional Bowel Disorders

Abstract

Acute bacterial gastroenteritis is the strongest risk factor identified to date for the subsequent development of postinfective irritable bowel syndrome. Clinical risk factors include prolonged acute illness and the absence of vomiting.
