Faculty: major administrative and teaching unit of the University responsible for programs and courses relating to common fields of study or academic disciplines.
Department: subdivision of a Faculty, responsible for a particular subject or group of subjects. McMaster’s research centres and institutes bring researchers together to solve complex problems.
Research Institutes & Centres: support the strategic interest of the University or a Faculty. Designation as an Institute is determined by one or more criteria which may include: comparative size, breadth of research, and the national and international impact of their work. Designation as a Centre is determined by their focus, which may be less broad.
