Numerical study of mechanical anisotropy of extruded magnesium alloy AZ31

Abstract

The recently developed Elastic Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent (EVPSC) model is applied to study the mechanical behavior of extruded magnesium alloy AZ31. Different specimen orientations with respect to the extrusion direction are used to study the mechanical anisotropy under both uniaxial tension and compression. It is found that the uniform strain and 0.2% proof strength under tension are sensitive to the loading direction. Under uniaxial compression, the 0.2% proof strength is almost independent of the loading direction. Numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental observations found in the literature.
