Modeling multiple length scales in solidification

Abstract

This article explores the computational challenges wrought by the desire to model all phenomena in solidification, from atomic scale interface kinetics to macroscopic heat flow. We focus first on the approach to computations on such a diverse scale, and then proceed to examine an application where we directly compute dendritic microstructures. We show that the application of adaptive gridding permits the extension of the computational window to a significant extent.
