Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that initially manifests as loss of the superficial zone (SZ) of articular cartilage. SZ chondrocytes (SZC) differ in morphology from other chondrocytes as they are elongated and oriented parallel to the tissue surface.
