Emerging technologies in magnetic storage (invited) (abstract)

This tutorial paper deals with the continuing evolution of magnetic data storage, and opportunities for the application of new magnetic materials and phenomena to this field. It is intended for people who are knowledgeable about magnetism, but not specialists in storage technology. Hot topics include giant magnetoresistance and spin valves, direct overwrite optical media, advanced head and media materials, and the materials requirements of high data rate contact recording.
