There has been significant research conducted on considerations for decolonizing, digitizing, and democratizing truth commission archives. However, research on these same considerations as they relate to the public institutions that make the most regular use of these truth commission documents – that is, museums – is lacking in a world where the virtual museum exhibit is on the rise. This chapter explores the ways in which museums have been working to navigate the challenges and considerations of using testimony from truth commissions in virtual exhibits. This study concludes by positing virtual museum exhibits as digital spaces for participatory state building that therefore require engaging with the same considerations of virtual participatory democratic processes.
