Victory and bureaucracy: The process of agonistic rewards

Abstract

This paper tries to set out the evidence, largely from papyri, for rewards in the Greek- style agonistic festivals of the later Roman empire, in regard to their origins, the professional unions that competed for them, the cities which paid for them, and especially the bureaucracy created by the reward system.
