Energy loss near edge structure study of fullerenes

Abstract

We have collected carbon K spectra using electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) from C60 and C70 fullerene nanocrystals using TEMs both with and without with a monochromator. Differences in the near edge structure are observed and attributed to the different bonding environments in the two molecules. The importance of high energy resolution for this differentiation is demonstrated.
