Preface

The information photonics conference has a rich history on its own. This venue has been supported and promoted by the International Commission for Optics (ICO) and held approximately every two years globally. From 1997, the venue was organized under the name Optics in Computing, often with additional thematic subjects. For example, in 2001, the meeting was held in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and focused on Ultrafast Electronics and Optoelectronics. In 2003, Optics in Computing Meeting was organized as Topical OSA Meeting and it was co-located with the Integrated Photonics Research (IPR) in Washington, DC. The subsequent, all remarkably successful venues, were held in 2004 in Engelberg, Switzerland, in 2006 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and then in 2008 in Hyogo, Japan. We are honoured to have the opportunity to build upon the legacy of these meetings. With the support of ICO and other international organizations such as the IEEE Photonics Society, we have expanded the coverage and upgraded the meeting to an international conference. The aim of the conference was to bring together scientists and research groups in this field from universities, industry and government laboratories globally to discuss progress and advancements in information photonics.
