Al–Si Alloys as a Model System for Damage Accumulation in Composite Materials

Abstract

The effect of reinforcement characteristics on the damage of composite materials has been investigated on a model Al–Si alloy. Alloy microstructure and damage were described quantitatively in the bulk material by metallographic evaluation of samples cut from the deformed material and using stereological methods. Yield stress, work hardening rate and ductility were assessed by conventional mechanical tests. Optical and scanning electron microscope “in situ” straining and acoustic emission recordings were conducted in order to identify the occurrence of the local damage events. The results of damage evaluation are discussed in connection with material deformation behaviour.
