Engineering-in-the-large. Software engineering and instrumentation

Abstract

This paper examines how techniques can be transferred between different engineering design disciplines. In particular it concentrates on technology transfer from the design of complex instrument systems to the design of software and vice-versa. The paper briefly examines current practice in these areas and attempts to establish the conceptual foundations on which technology transfer can be built. It outlines some techniques which appear appropriate for transfer and discusses anticipated benefits and difficulties.
