Overview

Dr. Luciana Catanese is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at McMaster University and a Stroke Neurologist at Hamilton General Hospital. She serves as Regional Medical Lead for Hyperacute Stroke Care and Stroke Unit Care for the Central South Regional Stroke Network in Ontario. Dr. Catanese is the Physician Lead of the Stroke Unit at Hamilton General Hospital and Director of the McMaster Stroke Fellowship Program. She is also an Investigator at the Population Health Research Institute.

 

Dr. Catanese completed her Neurology residency at Boston University, followed by fellowship training in Vascular Neurology at Harvard Medical School and additional training in Biostatistics at Harvard University.

 

She has been an investigator in multiple international clinical trials evaluating novel therapies for acute ischemic stroke and has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, including The Lancet, Circulation Research, and JAMA Neurology. She is a CIHR grant holder supporting her role as Co-Principal Investigator of the Direct Oral Anticoagulant and Thrombolysis (DO-IT) trial. Dr. Catanese contributes to the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations, serves as an Associate Editor for Stroke, and is a peer reviewer for CIHR.

 

Her research interests include hyperacute stroke therapies, acute stroke neuroimaging, stroke in women, cerebrovascular complications of COVID-19, and the acute management of intracranial hemorrhage.
