Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Behavior of MXenes

Metal carbides and nitrides with two-dimensional (2D) surfaces, known as MXenes, possess metallic conductivity, a large specific surface area, solution processability, and hydrophilic surfaces. As a result, MXenes have captured the leadership position among lightweight shielding materials since the first report on electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding of 2D Ti3C2Tx in 2016. MXenes sparked tremendous interest in the materials research community, resulting in more than 100 published papers on the EMI shielding properties of MXenes within three years. The multilayered structure of MXenes significantly increases the internal electromagnetic (EM) attenuation and significantly increases the absorption effectiveness, while the high electrical conductivity ensures considerable electromagnetic reflection on the surface. Furthermore, the high conductivity, distinct structure, and abundance of surface functional groups make Ti2CTX MXene a good candidate for energy storage and multifunctional composites applications.
