Multi-factor study on anaerobic digestion for municipal solid waste

Abstract

Municipal solid waste (MSW) was the waste generated in a community with the exception of industrial and agricultural waste. Hence MSW included residential waste (e.g., households), commercial (e.g., from stores, markets, shops, hotels etc), and institutional waste (e.g., schools, hospitals etc). The organic compound fraction of MSW in recent years ran up. Anaerobic digestion was an important method for waste treatment and energy recovery. According to the complex and multi-factor characteristics of anaerobic digestion system, orthogonal experiment was used to select the best technical conditions. TS, temperature, C/N ratio were considered in this experiment. Via our calculation, the three factors selected were ranked. Besides that, the most important parameters (pH and VFA) were reviewed particularly. The results showed that high TS could bring high gas output whereas the VFA was also high which could suppress the digestion process to certain degree.
