abstract

  • Despite being a largely forgotten intellectual, Erich Fromm has contributed much to the fields of nationalism, authoritarianism, and prejudice. This entry draws attention to Fromm's most influential critical theory relevant to current developments in the “new racism” scholarship. Though underestimating discursive racism, Fromm's interest in sub‐ and unconscious driving forces and class‐based origins of prejudice complements current interests in pre‐discursive (pre‐symbolic, affective, and bodily) racism and the group‐conflict approach to prejudice.
