abstract

  • “Soundscape” denotes the way in which sound makes places, at one level in terms of their general identity and representation, and at another in terms of an immediate experience. While musical sound is a common consideration in research, all types of natural and human‐made sounds found in urban and rural environments are equally relevant. Since the mid‐1990s, much research on soundscapes has taken a social constructivist perspective to uncover their different meanings. In the new millennium however, it has been increasingly informed by nonrepresentational theory to help convey their performative realities, and how they fundamentally “take place.”
