It appears likely that the technology to allow parents to choose the sexes of their children before conception will become available in the near future. A review of the techniques of such sex predetermination is given, followed by a discussion of some of the ways in which the possible impact of such a potential has been estimated. Some of the implications for the demographic and sociological development of a population are indicated, and also the effects on its epidemiology and health care system.
