Computation of residual stress distribution in tubes due to a rolled joint forming process

Abstract

Determining residual stresses in rolled joint connections is important in ensuring reliable performance of the components involved. A 3-D finite element model is developed to compute the residual stress distribution by simulating the rolling process used to form the joint. Significant developments required in such a model include sliding contact surfaces with friction, and a method of accommodating periodic symmetry of the structure. These features are included in a general finite element program used to simulate the rolling of a joint used in CANDU nuclear reactor fuel channels. A description of the modelling techniques is given, and results obtained from the analysis are presented.
