Evaluation of Heat Transfer Coefficients in Water Spray Quenching Systems

Abstract

Heat transfer coefficients in quenching process have been determined by quenching 1045 steel specimens instrumented with thermocouples. From the experimentally measured temperature profile, the relationship between the surface heat-transfer coefficient and surface temperature has been obtained. The effect of varying water flux, water temperature on the rate of heat transfer has been investigated. The heat transfer coefficients have been calculated by solving the one-dimension heat conduction problem using two analytical methods, the lumped capacitance model and the series solution.
