Osteoconduction and bone bonding of calcium phosphates are distinct phenomena

Abstract

The effect of topography on osteoconduction by, and bone bonding to, calcium phosphate implants were investigated using novel implant tape-casting preparations. Osteoconduction of calcium phosphates implants did not rely on the mechanical interdigitation of bone and implant. Bone bonding occurred by deposition of bone matrix onto implant surface microporosities.
