Relationship between the Vroman effect and surface properties

This study was performed in an effort to find a relationship between the Vroman effect and simpler in vitro surface characterizations including single component protein adsorption, surface energetics and elemental surface composition. The results from this work suggest that the Vroman effect with respect to fibrinogen may be predicted on nonabsorbing solid surfaces given only single protein adsorption and contact angle data. The hypothesis needs further evaluation on a wider variety of nonabsorbing solids and needs to be extended to account for the effects of absorption and swelling. Data for intrinsic coagulation assays on the same surfaces used in this study were also well fitted by a simple function of the in vitro characterizations in this study.
