Characterization of Gel-filled membranes for plasma protein fractionation

Abstract

The effectiveness of gel-filled (GF) membranes in plasma protein fractionation was studied. Permeate flux and plasma protein experiments were conducted on the GF membrane of carboxylic acid functionality, fitted on a stirred cell. The GF membrane results showed a considerably greater change in apparent sieving coefficients of the proteins with change in pH. The results obtained would suggest an efficient protein rejection mechanism and improved operating conditions are obtainable when using GF membranes compared to commercial ultrafiltration membranes.
