Effects of TNBS-induced stricture on colonic motor patterns

Abstract

Objective: To explore the effects of TNBS-induced stricture on colonic motor patterns. Methods: Thirty-two SD rats were divided randomly and equally into four groups: A, B, C, and D according to the treatment TNBS, TNBS+Smecta, Smecta, and normal saline (normal control), respectively. All rats were killed 8 days later and using spatiotemporal mapping to investigate the motor activities of the proximal colon. Results: Formation of strictures could be seen in the model of group A and no long distance contraction (LDC) develops. There were more complexes coming from the stricture, which were independent of the proximal colon; Motor patterns like rhythmic propulsive motor complexes, ripples, segmentation, proximal contractions and LDCs were observed in proximal colon; No obvious stricture appeared in group B and no changes in colonic motor patterns were found. Conclusion: The TNBS-induced stricture affects colonic motor patterns, but dioctahedral smectite can obviously prevent the TNBS-induced stricture, protect neurogenic components and maintain the coordination of movement of whole colon.
