Dr. Harriet MacMillan is a psychiatrist and pediatrician who has conducted family violence research for more than three decades. She retired in July 2024 from her position as a clinician-scientist at McMaster University and is now a Distinguished University Professor (Emerita) in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences and of Pediatrics, and a member (Emerita) of the Offord Centre for Child Studies. Harriet’s research has focused on the epidemiology of violence against children and women; she has led randomized controlled trials evaluating interventions to reduce child maltreatment, intimate partner violence, and associated impairment. Harriet served as the founding Director of the Child Advocacy and Assessment Program (CAAP) at McMaster Children’s Hospital, a multidisciplinary team committed to recognizing and responding to family violence. She was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in 2016.
