Joseph Boyce
Associate Professor, Earth, Environment & Society

Joe Boyce is an Associate Professor in the School of Earth, Environment and Society (SEES) at McMaster University, specializing in clastic sedimentology, applied geophysics and geoarchaeology. His current research focus is the investigation of Holocene (11,700 yr to present) paleoenvironments using sediment archives from lake basins and coastal environments. This work integrates coring, measurements of sediment physical/geochemical properties and near-surface geophysics to reconstruct past changes in Holocene paleoenvironments, climate and sea levels. Recent work includes geoarchaeological studies of ancient harbour sites in the Mediterranean (Greece, western Turkey, Israel) and prehistoric underwater archaeological sites in the lower Great Lakes. He is a member of a Canadian university interdisciplinary team investigating the varved succession of Crawford Lake as a candidate for the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) defining the Anthropocene Series. His other ongoing research interests are in geophysical mapping and subsurface modelling of ancient impact craters (Holleford, Wanapitei Lake, Skeleton Lake, Charity Shoal) and neotectonics in southern Ontario.
