Adam Fleming

Overview

Dr. Adam Fleming is a proud alumni of McMaster’s chemical engineering program (and, McMaster Musical Theatre). He completed his Master of Biomedical engineering and MD at the University of Toronto, and then did his Pediatrics and Ped Hematology-Oncology training at BC Children’s Hospital.  He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Neuro-oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute / Boston Children’s, and then went to McGill to lead the Pediatric Neuro-oncology Clinic and Residency Training program at Montreal Children’s Hospital.  Adam moved back to Hamilton in 2014, where he is a Associate Professor of Pediatrics and full time staff physician in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at McMaster Children’s Hospital. 

 

Dr. Fleming is the site principle investigator for several clinical trials in the field of brain tumour research. He is co-founder of the McMaster Pediatric Brain Tumour Study Group, and has over 100 publications collaborating with dozens of researchers in areas that include cancer survivorship (adiposity, late effects, models of AfterCare), translational research (primary tumour cell models, immune mechanisms), and quality improvement (clinical practice guidelines, retrospective reviews, patient-family experience)

 

Dr. Fleming is actively engaged in medical education in many roles.  He is currently Program Director for Pediatric Heme-Onc Residency program, Competency Committee member for Pediatric ER program, Ombudsperson for Pediatric Neurology, and Sub-specialty committee member at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.  He is a frequent invited speaker for Academic Half-day sessions (Pediatrics, Neurology, Neuro-surgery, Radiology, Pathology).

 

On the Undergraduate education side, he has been the core planner and lecturer for the medical school Oncology/Neoplasia curriculum, and participated in numerous Problem Based Learning groups, Clinical skills teaching and Observed Structured clinical exams (OSCE).

 

At McMaster Univerity he has been a faculty mentor/tutor for the Biomedical Engineering program and the Master of Biomedical Innovation program, served on the Graduate thesis committee for dozens of Masters and PhD students, as well as been a faculty mentor for several student-led reserach interest groups.
