Extended fine structure of gases by inelastic electron scattering

Abstract

The extended fine structures (XFS) in the K-shell continua of gaseous C6H6, CF4, CO2, Fe(CO)5 and CpCo(CO)2 (Cp &.z.dbnd;c-C5H5) have been recorded by electron energy loss Spectroscopy. Non-oscillatory background subtraction algorithms have been employed in order to reliably extract the weak XFS. Comparison with photon impact XFS of C6H6(s), CF4(g) and CO2(g) is used to demonstrate the close similarity of electron and photon XFS. The Fe(CO)5 and CpCo(CO)2 results illustrate the relative intensity of low and high-Z backscattering in mixed environments and provide models for XFS of chemisorbed CO and cyclopentadiene.
