Although exogenous transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is known to inhibit branching morphogenesis in mouse embryonic lungs in culture, whether the principal negative function of endogenous TGF-beta signaling resides in lung epithelium or mesenchyme remains unresolved.
