Abstract Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) can be used to remove cadmium (Cd 2+ ) via three removal mechanisms: electrodeposition; chemical precipitation; and biosorption. Here, we investigated how cadmium concentration affects its removal mechanisms and efficiency in lab‐scale MECs.
