Preservation of native renal function at different stages of renal impairment

Abstract

Over the past six decades the treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) by renal replacement modalities (RRT), such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or transplantation, has been life-saving for many renal patients. Despite their increasing quality and possibilities, these RRT modalities all still lag far behind the capacities of native kindey function,. The need for RRT has a major medical and economic impact, as well as an important influence on the quality of life of the patient. Optimal treatment of patients with renal disease and preservation of renal function is thus of importance for the whole of society (1)
