Norms for Word Affective Properties

Abstract

This article explores the history and contemporary landscape of affective norms for words, crucial for understanding emotion in language. Main methods of measuring lexical affect are described in relation to underlying psychological theories. The article reviews milestones in the development of affective norms and underscores both the methodological shortcomings of several existing collections of norms and proposals to rectify those.
