Culture and therapies

Abstract

Abstract This chapter examines the frontline experiences of speech and language therapists, behaviour analysts, and occupational therapists. It draws upon two cultural competency frameworks to explore clinical practices that promote respectful and effective services for individuals with intellectual disability from diverse cultural backgrounds. Therapists come from diverse cultural backgrounds, as do the individuals and families they work with. When applying assessment and treatment modalities across cultures, professionals need to carefully consider the unique cultural contexts of their clients and they may need to adapt their practices to ensure their work is safe, relevant, and effective. This chapter uses two frameworks for understanding and responding to cultural needs. Speech and language therapists and occupational therapists use a model called VISION and behavioural analysts use the Mushquash framework for culturally safe psychological assessment. The models are explored using individual stories throughout this chapter.
