Chapter 20 Adjuncts to pelvic floor muscle training—The application of products and devices

Abstract

There are a variety of products available to support and supplement pelvic floor function in female athletes. Individual pelvic floor deficits and symptom presentations guide the selection of adjuncts that may help to manage symptom expression and enhance pelvic floor function in symptomatic athletes. This chapter reviews the available adjunctive options used to augment pelvic floor strengthening, provide pelvic organ support, assist the continence mechanism(s), improve pelvic-related load capacity, and contain bodily fluid loss (urinary, fecal, and menstrual) alongside the current scientific evidence informing their use. Scientific research gaps are also highlighted to inform future investigations specific to female athlete populations.
