Imaging Techniques and Principles of Interpretation

Abstract

The barium examination remains the radiological method of choice for routinely demonstrating the lumen of the small intestine. Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are additionally used for assessing intestinal wall thickening and the extraluminal extent of primary intestinal disorders. During the past two decades, endoscopy has played an increasing role in the investigation and management of disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract and colon, but it is not yet proving to be a practical procedure for investigating the jejunum and ileum.
