Femoral vascular cannulation in domestic swine

Abstract

Femoral vein and artery are able to be accessed using simple percutaneous insertion of a sheet or blunt cannula for collection of blood or insertion of a diagnostic or other type of vascular catheters. To ease the process in swine, step by step picture guide is presented to help navigate surgeon into a femoral groove bordered by mm Gracillis and Sartorius. After palpation of arterial pulse, which in many cases is not palpable, surgeon in many cases has to rely on anatomy of both bordering muscles to insert a trocar, in our case a simple Insyte non-Autoguard catheter. For this procedure, swine is placed in dorsal recumbence with both rear legs extended and secured while under full anesthesia. For novice surgeon, local anesthesia using e.g. 2% Lidocain s.c. injection into the area can be used to limit local pain stimuli while performing the catheterization.
