Improving the spatial resolution of the multiple multiwire proportional chamber gamma camera

Abstract

It is shown that it is possible to improve the spatial resolution of the MMPC gamma camera dramatically by reducing the section width, increasing the gas filling density and applying pulse height selection. Unfortunately it appears that the first two procedures on their own make for some improvement but it is their combination with a fierce cut on the pulse height selection which produces the real improvement. Whether a sacrifice of a factor of four or five in detection efficiency is an acceptable price to pay for the improved spatial resolution clearly depends very much on the application envisaged.
