Association of self-reported posture habits and vision problems with chronic neck pain: A case-control study

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the risk factors associated with chronic neck pain in young adults over a five-year period. A retrospective case-control study was carried out. The sample consisted of 146 participants, 73 cases and 73 controls, with a mean age of 21.64 years (SD = 2.02), of these, 78.1 % (n = 114) were women. Participants answered questions regarding sociodemographic, lifestyle and psychological variables. Self-reported posture habits were assessed with illustrations and vision problems were assessed with a yes or no question. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the Odds Ratio (OR) and the respective confidence intervals (95 %). There was an association between chronic neck pain with vision problems (OR = 2.83; 95 %CI = 1.26-6.38) and sedentary lifestyle (p = 0.049; OR = 2.41; 95 % CI = 1.01-5.88), but we did not find an association between postural habits and chronic neck pain (p > 0.05). Among young adults, a significant association was observed between vision problems and chronic neck pain, whereas no meaningful association was found for postural habits.
