Canadian women’s vibrator use: Prevalence and characteristics

Abstract

How common is vibrator use among Canadian women? The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of women’s vibrator use and assess the demographic characteristics of vibrator users. A nationally representative sample of 1,170 women participated in an anonymous, online survey of sexual behaviour. Just over half (50.6%) of Canadian women have used a vibrator in their lifetime. About one third (31.7%) of women have used a vibrator in the previous year. Vibrator use was associated with age, educational attainment, and sexual identity, with younger, more educated, and bisexual women the most likely to have used a vibrator recently. Vibrator use was not significantly associated with other types of sexual behaviour, with the expected exceptions of masturbation and the use of other types of sex toys. While this study is the first of its kind in Canada, these findings are consistent with studies from other countries.
