PHYSICAL MODELING OF FLUID FLOW IN ELECTRIC ARC FURNACES

Abstract

A 1/3-scale model of an EAF was designed as a "thin-slice" model so that gas could be injected to simulate foaming gas evolution. Gases were also injected to simulate the forces of the arc jets, bottom stirring and oxygen lances. The effects of these on the fluid flow of the simulated metal are presented. Additionally, an arc channel model was improved to take into account the temperature distribution across the arc section. The predicted momentum force and arc diameter were used in the simulation of arc jets in the "thin-slice" model.
