Abstract
Background: Outcome measures in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) can be classified as patient-important, surrogate and composite outcomes. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis trials often use surrogate or composite outcome measures, often involving radiographically detected and clinically asymptomatic VTE.
