The Geometric Design and Fabrication of Actuating Cellular Structures
Abstract
A geometric method is presented to design cellular structures that actuate upon inflation. Through finite element simulations, it is demonstrated that these structures can undergo large directed expansions upon inflation and efficiently convert an input pressure into an output force. This design concept is validated through the controlled swelling of tangible prototypes fabricated using multimaterial 3D printing.
