Sopdet/Sothis
Abstract
Abstract Sopdet is the Egyptian name the brightest star, Sirius. Observation of Sopdet was central to timekeeping and calendrical activity in pharaonic Egypt. The few surviving examples of dated astronomical observations of the behavior of Sirius supply important evidence for the chronology of Egyptian history. The star was personified as a goddess of the same name, sometimes depicted in the form of a cow.
