Abstract

Swimming is a sport which is enjoyed by many at a recreational level. This chapter focuses on the practical aspects of the tasks of the aquatic team doctor. The safety preparation as well as the poolside/beachside approach, field of play (FoP) management, and extraction for the aquatic sports, lifeguards, casualty, synchronized swimming, asthma, team doctor in trouble, are reviewed along with the common illness and injury presentations in the respective aquatic disciplines. Guidelines for treatment are included in addition to advice for prevention. In full competition (both competition and practice venues), there should be fully trained and practiced lifeguards in place. Synchronized swimming, similar to swimming, has a high incidence of asthma. In all aquatic sports, it is essential that the team doctor develop a close understanding of the water rescue facilities and FoP medical treatment provided by the competition venue.
