Abstract

Chenopods synthesize betaine by a two-step oxidation of choline: choline --> betaine aldehyde --> betaine. Both oxidation reactions are carried out by isolated spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts in darkness and are promoted by light.
