Quasars: What Turns Them Off?

Abstract

While the high-redshift quasar luminosity function closely parallels the hierarchical growth of dark matter halos, at lower redshifts quasars exhibit an antihierarchical turnoff, which moves from the most luminous objects to the faintest.
