References 311 1. INTRODUCTION The principle of adequate closed drainage for pleural empyema has been a surgical axiom since the early 1900s. Sir William Osler identified the importance of pleural drainage for empyema, but ironically succumbed to inadequately drained pleural sepsis (1).
