Radiation modeling in an EAF

Abstract

The modeling of radiation and heat transfer in an electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking is discussed. The first step in modeling is for heat transfer during the refining period, that is arcing between the electrodes and a stabilized liquid steel bath, covered by a layer of slag, and to quantify the radiative heat exchange inside the furnace. It also permits the estimation of the effect of exposed arc length, and therefore the slag foaming height, on the refractory walls, and determines the temperature distribution of different parts of the furnace. Calculated energy radiated to water panels and roof shows that the model can be used as a valuable tool in evaluation of EAF furnace design and operational parameters optimization.
