Deformation mechanisms in AZ31 magnesium alloy tube bending

Abstract

This paper investigates the plastic deformation mechanisms during bending of extruded AZ31 magnesium alloy tubes at 150°C. The results suggest that the outer skin of the tube subjected to tension deforms mainly by dislocation slip, while {10-12} [10-11] extension twins constitute the main deformation mechanism at the inner skin of the tube wall, with gradual transition from one mechanism to the other through the tube circumference. Extension twinning leads to drastic texture change.
